How to update this

A. Change the games (the catalogue). The games are stored inside this file as compressed (gzip) data. Do not edit that block by hand: in a text editor it is unreadable letters. Edit an exported copy instead.

  1. Scroll to the bottom of the page and open Your file, updates and recovery. Under Update the catalogue, press Export data JSON. A file called ROG-Game-Catalog-schema1.json downloads.
  2. Open that file in any text editor (Notepad works). It is one very long line, so use Find (Ctrl+F) to reach a game.
  3. Worked example. Search for "Portal","400". A little further along you will see ,null,98.5,199707,8.8,6178,. The 98.5 is the Steam score. Change it to 97.5. Change only the number: keep every comma, quote and bracket. Save the file. (The number straight after the game's web link and null is always the Steam score.)
  4. Back in the page, press Select updated data JSON and pick the edited file. Read the preview: it lists each game that would change and says what. Press Apply this update (or Cancel). Undo is available.
  5. Press Save this HTML in the top bar and keep the downloaded copy. That copy now holds your update.

Check it worked: search for Portal and look at its card. Do not touch anything else in the file. Files over 12 MiB are refused. The line "Catalogue content" in the footer comes from a small readable block named content-meta (version, date, source); you may edit those words by hand in a text editor, but never the compressed directory-data or directory-backup blocks.

B. Change the colours. Open the file in a text editor and search for --accent-light. Two values set the accent colour in every look: --accent-light for Paper and --accent-dark for Charcoal and True Black. Text on accent buttons uses --on-accent-light and --on-accent-dark. Example: change #8A3C53 to another dark colour. Keep light text readable on it, and leave the games alone.

C. Update the app itself. Replace the file with the new version and open it. Your saved views and Look stay, because the browser keeps them. Your filters, saved games and hidden games live inside the HTML copy you saved, so they do not move to a new file by themselves: save a copy first, and keep it.

What lives where

The compare list and your shortlist (saved games) live in the open page. Compare is never saved. Your shortlist, saved views and Look choice are also remembered by this browser, so a reload keeps them. Hidden games and filters are kept only if you press Save this HTML and keep that copy. Nothing is sent anywhere and there is no account.

Keep it

Press Save this HTML (one button, in the bar at the top) after you change filters or saved games, then keep the downloaded copy. Your original file stays unchanged. Export data JSON saves the catalogue alone.

Delete it

Reset my choices (in the same footer section) clears filters, saved games and hidden games in this tab, and Undo brings them back. To remove everything, delete the files you downloaded. Delete a saved view with its Delete button. To forget your Look choice and every saved view at once, clear this site's data in the browser.

Compare

Press Compare on two to four games. When the second game is added, the comparison opens over the page with a button "Close and go back to the game". When it is closed, a bar at the bottom of the screen shows "Compare (2): open" so you can look again. It shows the user rating blend (Steam 75%, Metacritic users 25%), tags, source links and retrieval dates. A value that is not recorded says so.

Saved views and links

Save current filters stores a named set of filters in this browser (up to 20). Export views writes them to a file and Import views reads such a file back. The address of this page also carries the current filters after the # sign, so you can bookmark or share them; it never carries saved games, hidden games or your compare list.

Search and counts

Search checks titles, genres and tags, and also accepts close spellings when nothing matches exactly. The number in brackets beside a filter option shows how many games it would list, given your other filters. A game with several genres or tags counts once under each, so those counts can add up to more than the total.

Printing

Print prints the page of results that is open (up to 24 games). Closed details are opened and the address of every source link is written out after the link. Your choices are not printed.

Catalogue version and date

Sources

Every game shows where its figures came from and when they were retrieved. Ratings and prices change, so check the linked pages before you buy.

Glossary: words used in this app
Z1 Extreme
The processor chip in the original ROG Ally handheld. Settings advice here is for that chip.
D10 and XInput
XInput is the standard Xbox-style controller mode that most PC games expect. D10 is the label this app's setup checks use for the controller setup it assumes (Xbox-style controls on the TV); no source in this file defines it further.
VRAM
Memory set aside for graphics. The Ally shares its main memory, so a bigger VRAM setting leaves less for the game.
W (watts)
The power limit for the chip. Higher can mean more speed and more heat and fan noise.
Metacritic users
Scores from ordinary players on the Metacritic site, out of 10. Not the critics.
Evidence
A dated, sourced note that a game passes or fails a check, for example that it supports split-screen. "Unknown" means nobody recorded it.
Profile
One set of recorded graphics settings (power, resolution, VRAM) from a guide page for a game.
Snapshot
The catalogue as it was on a date. This file also keeps the previous snapshot so a bad update can be undone.
Compatibility HTML
A larger saved copy that stores the games as plain text, so it opens even where compressed data cannot be unpacked.
gzip, JSON
gzip is a way of compressing data. JSON is a plain-text format for data that a text editor can open.
Hash sign (#)
The part of the web address after the # sign. Here it carries your current filters.
Technical notes

Import size

Import accepts a JSON file up to 12 MiB. An export of the catalogue is about 5 MB, so it imports with room to spare.

File size

This file is about 1.1 MB. The embedded catalogue of 739 games with their sources, its backup copy and the embedded fonts account for most of it, which is above the 1 MB tier for a single page. That is a recorded exception: the catalogue is the product and cannot be split into a lighter page without a server. It opens slowly on a slow connection.

How close spellings work

When nothing matches exactly, each word may differ from the start of a word in the game by one edit when it has 5 to 8 letters, or two edits when it has 9 or more. An edit is an insertion, a deletion, a substitution or swapping two neighbouring letters (the optimal string alignment distance). Short words must match exactly. This is original code in this file, not a library.

Counts for power, resolution and VRAM

These three are counted together: because all three must match one recorded guide profile, each option shows how many games would be listed if you chose it while keeping your other two choices. Single-choice lists such as release status add up to the total.
